Chris Larsen is certified with a FAA Airframe and Powerplant degree. He also carries a Complex High Performance Single Engine Land Aircraft pilot rating. Chris's passion for high performance aircraft also carries into the automotive racing industry. He has nearly 3 decades of high performance automotive racing background including experience with SCTA Land Speed Record, Hydroplane Racing, USAC Sprint, Dirt & Asphalt Late Model, Indy Racing League, Busch Series Stock Car, SOD Sprint Car, Exhibition Jet Dragster, Top Alcohol Dragster, Competition Eliminator, Super Gas, Super Pro, and extensive professional competition engine machining and building.
Chris's passion for both the aerospace industry as well as the motorsports industry were finally combined when in the late 1990's Chris and his wife Elaine decided to focus their efforts with the best of both worlds . The already successful, Larsen Motorsports, took a new direction and began assembling exhibition jet racing teams. The teams were immediately popular choices for track operators and promoters and today are regularly recognized as being among the premier exhibition jet racing teams in North America. Chris currently sits on the Industry Advisory Board for Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University's College of Aviation in Daytona Beach, FL and Embry-Riddle's Advisory Board for the College of Engineering in Prescott, AZ
Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and renowned race team Larsen Motorsports enjoy a partnership that has proved to be a successful research and marketing enterprise for more than six years. Driver Elaine Larsen has over 18 years experience racing with National Hot Rod Racing Association and International Hotrod Racing Association. Chris Larsen has worked hand-in-hand with the students and professors conducting aerodynamics testing, advanced fuel research, as well as developing high performance vehicle safety innovations. The Miller Jet Dragster was built as a vehicle for engaging the racing community. It complements our motorsports program with the mission to educate and promote welding at all levels of competition. The partnership between Miller Welding Co. and Larsen Motorsports supports this goal, and inspires fabricators with the knowledge and tools to succeed, both on the track and off.
The Miller Jet Dragster was custom designed by Larsen Motorsports and fabricated by Worthy Motorsports, Palmetto, Fla. in Feb. 2009. Using Miller Syncrowave® 180 and 250 TIG machines, every component was fabricated to strict engineering standards in order for the vehicle to endure the extreme G-forces applied during acceleration and deceleration. The Larsen Motorsports High Performance Vehicles Research & Development Center was specifically designed to contribute to all high performance vehicles with safety innovations, material testing and aerodynamic testing.
An in house jet propulsion laboratory capable of core level turbo-jet turbine engine engineering and maintenance. Unique modifications to internal components affecting gas path flows are among the facilities specialities. Additionally, experimental prototype thrust augmenting devices are a primary focus of the laboratory's day to day operations. A fully functional mobile thrust bed with full data acquisition is also available.
Within the Larsen facility are spaces designed for projects that are not able to be seen publicly. Secure rooms are available with guaranteed security and control for special partners in industry wishing for secrecy with their projects.
Also by design, if additional engineering support is needed, the university has made available a wide range of renowned engineering specialists from Embry Riddle Aeronautical University's campus only about 1000 feet away. The flourishing relationship between the Larsen's and the university has produced successful projects with Embry Riddle's jet propulsion laboratory, aviation maintenance science department, and a number of engineering departments.
One of the primary goals of this facility is to offer affordable solutions to the aerospace and Motorsports industries by leveraging our relationship with the brilliant young minds of the students at Embry Riddle through volunteer recruits and student interns that will work and learn at the facility daily.
Conveniently located at the Daytona International Airport, the Larsen Research Center has excellent access to airlines with multiple flights daily. Same day trips are easily supported. For corporate aircraft operators, just a couple hundred feet away is the ATP Jet Center that is among several FBO's near the facility that can accommodate full service support to any corporate operator. A multitude of hotels are available near the airport, or, ocean front accommodations on world famous Daytona Beach are only minutes away.
One of the strongest assets is that the Larsen Research Center is that it is an American owned and operated small business.
